Two-thirds of UK Adult Population do not have life insurance

A survey from LifeSearch suggests that more than two thirds of the UK adult population either have no life insurance or do not know whether or not they hold life insurance cover. This is despite the fact that 14.3 million households in England were owner-occupiers between 2015 and 2016. Life insurance can help to pay off a mortgage in the event of a family member’s or partners death.

A survey completed by Scottish Widows found that a fifth of dads admitted that their households would not survive financially if they lost their income due to long-term illness. Another LifeSearch survey completed in 2005 found that 29% of UK adults said poor health was their biggest worry, followed jointly by poor health of family members and death of a family member (both at 24%).

What is life insurance?

Most life insurance policies are designed to pay out a cash lump sum to your loved ones if you die while covered by the policy. The cash lump sum payment can help with everyday money worries such as household bills, childcare costs, education costs or mortgage payments.

There are many types of protection:

Life Insurance: will pay out a lump sum to your dependents should you pass away.

Critical Illness: will provide a lump sum if the policyholder is diagnosed with a specified illness – such as cancer or a heart attack.

Income Protection: there are two types of these covers, short and long term protection. The short term will provide an income for one or two years. The long term will provide a regular income if you are unable to work due to illness or disability until you are well enough to return to work.
