Economic ups and downs

Just as we think things have brightened, out comes the inflation figure at 4% versus the expected 3.9%. That was blamed on tobacco and alcohol – the latter also as duty rose on wine last autumn, based on alcohol strengths. It is as if the government doesn’t realise that increasing taxes on products increases inflation......

Autumn market musings

I am going to be signing-off for a few weeks now for a much-needed proper break, (excluding Christmas) the first since July last year, so am completing an eshot just before I disappear. Of course I shall be keeping more than a wary eye on things and especially the markets (the joys of global internet...

Inflation and cautious optimism

So Sterling has hit its highest level against the Dollar since April last year and the Euro since August. Whilst it reduces the value of investors’ overseas’ assets, strength is positive and I can say ‘expected’ though whether it is on confidence in the UK and our economic prowess (or others’ regression) is hard...

Spring investments

Spring is in the air! It’s really lovely to see the days drawing-out and some sunshine back. Snowdrops have been lovely this year and the daffodils and other bulbs will be out soon. It’s a year now since Russia invaded Ukraine and we can but hope and pray that something resolves soon over that...

Happy Christmas and on to the next chapter

Well, I think that all which remains is to wish all our supportive readers a very Happy Christmas and dare I suggest a prosperous 2023. It’s certainly not been an easy 2022 and the Ukraine War is still over-shadowing so much and causing such grief but we must pity the poor Ukrainians and indeed...

A snapshot of what we do as wealth managers

Let’s start with some good news. The price of wheat is back to where it was before Russia invaded Ukraine. I bet you haven’t read that anywhere. It really is quite amazing however, now almost down half on its March high. At this rate we’ll be thinking of buying-in again as we sold ours...

Latest in the Blue Planet saga

I am sorry to issue another eshot so soon, but Blue Planet Investment Trust’s ill-advised Board has decided to issue another letter and this time to the tiniest investors, to those with mere tens of pounds’ worth of investment in it. A letter is going to all participating investors soon.   I have...

Unhappy dog in dog house

Ups, downs and in the dog house

I was pleased to hear Australia’s second wealthiest man, Andrew Forrest, is starting a criminal prosecution against Facebook for taking money from scammers and then publishing their adverts. It will be wonderful if the case succeeds and then compensation could be the next course for all those who have lost billions. It is not right that...

Risk Warning

The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate some areas mentioned on our web site including: Business Buy to Let Mortgages, Taxation & Accountancy, Probate Administration and Will Writing.

Stockmarket investments can offer income through the payment of dividends and interest and good opportunities for capital appreciation over the longer term. By this, generally we mean periods in excess of five years, preferably much longer. However, we can never promise you particular returns, especially in the short-term. At any point in time but especially in the short term, your capital could be worth less than the original amount invested as some of the selected holdings may fall in value, regardless of expectations at the time of acquisition. We may also invest in funds that hold overseas securities. The value of these investments may increase or decrease as a result of changes in currency exchange rates. Returns achieved in the past cannot be relied upon to be repeated.
